About The Programs

Twice a year, we connect District residents with 5-month paid green externships working with local contractors and other organizations. We link District residents who are new to the workforce, between jobs, or looking for a career change with local contractors, businesses, municipal agencies, and other key players in the green economy. The Workforce Development Program is designed to help prepare residents for shifting job markets and emerging green careers while increasing the capacity of local contractors and organizations working in the sustainable energy sector.

For Externs

Externships are open to District residents of every experience level. Whether new to the workforce, between jobs, or looking to begin building a new career, the Workforce Development program welcomes all to discover new professional opportunities in the emerging green economy. Externs gain direct experience working with mentors while developing valuable, practical skills. Access to trainings and credentials in different energy efficiency topics provides further opportunity to grow while job placement assistance helps program participants take that final step into the workforce. All of this is provided at no cost with DC’s living wage at a minimum. Externships are available in positions such as:

  • Administrative Assistant
  • Building Maintenance
  • Electrical Engineer
  • HVAC Helper
  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Program Assistant
  • Project Assistant
  • Solar Technician

For Mentors

More than 20 local contractors, businesses, municipal agencies, and other organizations have partnered with us to provide on-the-job, DCSEU-assisted training to District residents. Mentors play an essential role, crafting the externship experience while providing training specific to their workplace. Potential employers have the chance to interview candidates as they work – an opportunity to find the right person for the job, at little to no cost to their company.
