The Retrofit Lab: Upgrading to High Performance Heat Pumps (In-Person Demonstration Project)

In this on-site 4-hour workshop, Symbi Homes will lead a three-part hands-on training session on high performance heat pump retrofitting for general contractors, architects, and HVAC service providers. Topics include:

  1. Planning for heat pump deployment including energy audits and mechanical design documents (Manual J, D, and S) 
  2. Air sealing, insulation and indoor air quality measures 
  3. Heat pump installation basics

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the components and interpret the results of a baseline, pre-retrofit energy audit 
  • Develop a full scope of work associated with upgrading HVAC and hot water systems to all-electric high performance heat pumps 
  • Read and review mechanical design documents 
  • Find qualified contractors to perform various aspects of the work associated with heat pump upgrades
