The Retrofit Lab: Preparing Homes for Heat Pump Upgrades – Core Components

In this 120-minute presentation, builders Matt Kulp and Nicole Tysvaer of Symbi Homes will break down the most important aspects of retrofitting single-family homes for the installation of all-electric, energy-efficient heat pump HVAC and hot water systems. Topics include baseline energy audits, electric rough-in and panel upgrades, space considerations for equipment and ductwork, air sealing and insulation, reviewing mechanical design documents (Manual J, D, S), and proper commissioning of HVAC equipment. Multiple case studies will be shared to illustrate the complexities of transitioning to high-performance heat pump technologies. In addition, we will share tips for identifying well-qualified contractors to perform the work. Intended for residential contractors and architects, this new training will be developed for the DC Train Green program and serve as a prerequisite to the in-person Retrofit Lab heat pump installation series.
