Application Guide

As a quick point of reference, the DCSEU offers the following rebate amounts:

  • $75-$500 rebates for qualifying electric lawn mowers.
  • $35-$800 rebates for select ENERGY STAR® certified dehumidifiers, clothes washers, clothes dryers, washer/dryer combination units, smart thermostats, and refrigerators.
  • $250-$5,000 rebates for qualifying electric heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and central air conditioners.
  • $400-$2,000 rebates for electrification services such as heavy-ups and electric circuit additions.

Step 1. Gather your documentation

*Rebates for the following equipment (dehumidifiers, clothes washers, clothes dryers, and refrigerators) are subject to change based on potential future programmatic changes pending District of Columbia's Public Service Commission regulatory proceedings.

Step 2. Gather your documentation

  1. Please make sure your equipment is installed prior to submitting your application (where applicable).
  2. You will need the following documentation:
    • "Dated sales receipt" or "Special Services Customer Invoice" (which must list the model number).
    • HVAC specific equipment must include the following:
      1. A receipt with the following information:
        • The contractor's name, address, and phone number.
        • The make and model number of the installed equipment.
        • The installation date and address.
        • The total amount paid (must have $0 balance or be marked as ‘paid’). 
      2. DOB (formerly DCRA) permit
      3. Licensed contractors must submit a materials invoice from their HVAC equipment distributor.
    • To qualify for increased gas-to-electric rebates, you will need to provide one of the following to show proof of electrification in addition to items above:
      • Method #1 (recommended)
        • Pre-installation photos showing gas equipment with gas line visible. For gas dryers and stoves, only a picture of the equipment is required.
        • Post-installation photos showing gas capping and installed electric equipment.
      • Method #2 - Only available for fully electrified homes. Homes with remaining gas equipment cannot use this method.
        • Copy of a pre-installation gas bill, showing usage, that matches installation address.
        • Copy of a post-installation gas bill, showing no usage, that matches installation address.
      • Method #3
        • Contractor invoice that indicates previous gas technology being capped and replaced.
        • Post-installation photos showing gas capping and installed electric equipment.
    • To qualify for electrification service rebates, you will need to provide the following to show proof of electrification in addition to items above (if applicable):
      • Heavy-Ups (Electric Panel Upgrade): Rebates are only eligible for completed heavy ups for customers replacing gas/oil water heating or heating equipment with a heat pump water heater or heat pump.
        • Pre-photos of electrical panel ahead of the upgrade.
        • Department of Buildings (DOB) Permit and Inspection Scorecard.
        • Post-upgrade photos of the electrical panel.
      • Electrical Circuits: Rebates are only eligible for completed electric circuit additions (up to 3 per home) for customers replacing gas/oil equipment with the following: heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, electric and induction stoves, and electric and heat pump dryers.
        • Contractor invoice with itemized circuits.
        • Department of Buildings (DOB) Permit.
        • Post-upgrade photos of the new circuits.

Step 3. Apply for your rebate online or by mail

Applying Online:

  1. Visit Online Rebate Center at rebates.dcseu.com or click the button below.
  2. Create an account and begin your application.
  3. Choose from the residential property options that best match your project.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to fill in information about your project.
  5. Select your Product Category and begin adding products and all relevant documentation and product information.

Applying By Mail:

  1. View and print a rebate application form for any of the following appliances and equipment. Follow the mail-in instructions on each form. Make sure you send all the supporting documents necessary to qualify your rebate.
  1. Postmark your application(s) before 09/30/25 to qualify for Fiscal Year 2025 (10/01/24 – 09/30/25) rebates and address via the instructions on the form. Once the DCSEU has reviewed your application, staff will follow up with you to address any potential issues or to notify you of approval. Once approved, your check will be sent by mail to the address provided in the application.

Step 4. Get paid

You will receive a confirmation e-mail indicating that your online rebate center application has been submitted. Once the DCSEU has reviewed your application, our staff will follow up with you to address any potential issues or to notify you of approval. Once approved, your check will be sent by mail to the address provided in the application.

How long does the rebate process take?

Typical equipment purchase to rebate payout time:

Working with the DCSEU, the entire time from start to finish can be expected to take between 1 and 3 months.

Ensure the timely processing of your rebate:

  1. Check rebate eligibility before you buy.
  2. Submit a completed application before September 15th of each fiscal year.
  3. Install your equipment prior to application and include all supporting documentation.
