The Historic Howard Theatre celebrates energy upgrades with support from the DCSEU

The DCSEU joined DC Green Bank, The Howard Theatre Development Group, DC Preservation League, DC Department of Energy an Environment (DOEE), Uprise Solar, and Boland to celebrate the installation of new solar, battery storage, and HVAC systems at The Howard Theatre. These improvements will save the landmark nearly $2 million over their lifetimes, including an estimated 40% reduction in heating and cooling energy use.

The DCSEU contributed more than $35,000 in incentives and provided engineering reviews and support, helping to ensure the project’s success. The upgrades were also made possible through DC Green Bank financing and support from the National Park Service’s African American Civil Rights Grant secured by the DC Preservation League.

“The Howard Theatre stands as a significant cultural landmark in our city, and we are proud to support enhancements that will maintain its legacy while improving its energy efficiency and sustainability,” said Ben Burdick, Managing Director of the DCSEU. “DC Green Bank’s financing combined with DCSEU incentives exemplify the positive outcomes of collaboration among local government, contractors, and programs that promote clean energy and the conservation of a historic site within the District.”
