Langley Elementary's Second Annual STEM Fair Showcases Student Innovation and Sustainability

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Langley Elementary School hosted its second annual STEM Fair. Students from Pre-K to 5th grade showcased their science, technology, engineering, and mathematic explorations to a panel of judges from the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) and the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia (DCPSC). Projects ranged from testing theories of osmosis to understanding the relationship between pollinators and flowers.  Pre-K through 2nd grade students submitted class projects while the 3rd through 5th graders submitted individual projects with an award ceremony scheduled for May 24th.

“Our continued partnership with DCSEU has allowed our students to create a meaningful real-world connection to their units of study in Energy and Engineering,” said Kristina Kellogg, Langley ES Principal.  “Students are then given the opportunity to showcase their interests in STEM to DCSEU staff by presenting their projects to them at our Annual STEM Fair. This partnership has and will continue to encourage and motivate our scholars to develop solutions to energy conservation and Climate Change.”

The STEM Fair isn’t just about science; it’s about shaping the future. Langley Elementary’s commitment to sustainability aligns perfectly with the District’s ambitious climate goals.  The District is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2045 and in 21 years these students will be adults at the forefront of a cleaner, more efficient DC. Since 2022, Langley Elementary, in collaboration with the DCSEU and the DCPSC, has fostered a dynamic partnership that celebrates energy efficiency and renewable energy through a local lens and inspires young minds to tackle global climate challenges head-on.

“Our partnership with Langley ES and the DCPSC allows us to connect directly with the District’s next generation of change-makers,” said Ernest Jolly, DCSEU Managing Director. “Participating in the STEM Fair at Langley is an exciting time for us to get a sneak peek at future innovations in STEM and to the District’s climate journey.”

"Fostering the next generation of energy leaders is a key aspect of our community engagement, so we're thrilled to have our staff members participate as judges in Langley Elementary School's STEM Fair," stated Emile Thompson, Chairman of the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia. "We aim to spark curiosity, drive innovation, and empower these young minds so they can see how they can help shape a brighter, more sustainable future in the District."
