Celebrating Excellence in the Green Workforce: Summer 2024 Workforce Development Cohort Graduation
On Wednesday, September 11th, 2024, the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) once again became a hub of celebration as we marked the graduation of our Summer 2024 Workforce Development Cohort. This special day was filled with pride and anticipation as 17 DC residents crossed the finish line of an intensive journey, stepping confidently into the local green workforce.
The graduation ceremony featured an inspiring keynote address by long-time Workforce Development Program Mentor, Antonio "Tony" Harrison, Greenscape Energy He emphasized the importance of leadership, teamwork, and having clear goals. Through this model, Tony discussed key components that have helped him become a better person and thrive in his career in the green industry. This included his story of starting as a young college student working at Giant, his personal and professional development, and becoming the Lead Project Manager at Greenscape Energy.
“From a courtesy clerk to standing here giving you this speech, I didn't change just externally. Change happens internally, in how I think about who I am and who I want to become. As my mission changed, my leadership had to evolve.” said Harrison, “I couldn’t stay with the same people who were with me when I was steering from the back because now, I want to lead from the front. As you move on to the next chapter, make sure your mission aligns with where you’re headed. Most importantly, know what your mission is.”
Noah Buchsbaum also delivered a heartfelt speech in his “Extern’s Address”. Having worked as an Analyst at Ameresco, Noah spoke about how his experience with the Workforce Development Program changed his life for the better. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunities and knowledge gained through the program and his mentor, highlighting how it has prepared him for the next step in his career. Noah's journey doesn't end here—he was thrilled to share that he has accepted a job offer at ICF, where he will continue to apply the skills and insights he acquired during his time in the Program.
During the ceremony, Gleniss V. Brown Wade, Manager of Workforce Development took a moment to highlight two individuals from the program, Belle To and Jamilla Ambush, for their exceptional dedication. Both were recognized for their punctuality and commitment, consistently showing up on time every day of the program and never missing a Wednesday meeting. Their reliability and dedication exemplify the values that the DCSEU strives to instill in all participants.
This graduation was more than a ceremony, it was a testament to the hard work and determination of our externs. Over the past few months, they have been immersed in hands-on training, industry education, and real-world experience. From LEED Green Associate training to solar installation and project management experience, they have gained the tools and knowledge needed to make an impact on the local green workforce.
The Workforce Development program at DCSEU is designed to do more than just educate; it empowers. By providing our externs with practical skills and insider insights, we are not only shaping the future of these individuals but also contributing to a more sustainable future for our entire community. The growth and transformation witnessed in this cohort are clear indicators of the potential that lies within our city's residents when given the right opportunities.
These 17 individuals are now equipped to take on vital roles in energy efficiency, sustainability, and renewable energy, bringing innovation and passion to an industry that is crucial for our planet’s future.
